Stress can get to the best of students. The announcement of the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) examination dates for classes X and XII has put pupils under pressure to perform. The board exams start on March 1.
Amit Kumar, a Class XII student of St Dominic Savio’s High School, said: “I was tense before announcement of the exam dates. Now, with just some weeks to go, I am feeling the pressure. I am focusing on revisions. I listen to songs and take adequate sleep to beat the stress.”
Chandrali Mukherjee, a Class XII student of DAV, BSEB, echoed similar sentiments. She said: “I am a bit nervous now after the dates have been announced. I listen to music, read good books and paint to compose myself.”
Class X student Jyoti Singh said: “I have started revisions. In order to reduce stress, I talk to friends and go out for some time to take a break.”
Neeta Singh, mother of Rahul Singh, who would appear for his Class XII examinations this year, said: “I know it is a difficult time for students. Not even two months are left for the exams to start. I ensure that he gets proper food. I also encourage him by saying that other kids are more stressed. He can concentrate on studies only if he is stress-free. Proper food is also very important. I also allow him to watch television or to take a break sometimes.”
Child specialist Dr Kiran Sharan said: “There is no need of being tensed. How would they study if they are under pressure ? They should sleep for six to eight hours daily. They should also talk to friends or family members or go for walks. Changing the subject of study is a good idea. Apart from milk, fruits, dry fruits and nuts should be incorporated in their diet.”
Psychologist Dinesh Kumar suggests yoga, counselling, memorising tricks and others to reduce exam stress.
