The week-long Pedro Arrupe Memorial Cricket Tournament concluded on Saturday with St Karen's High School proving to be the better team on the day.

St Karen's won the toss after the students of host school, St Michael's High School, presented a welcome song before the guests. Batting first, St Karen's put up 126 runs on the board at the loss of nine wickets.

The Team A of St Michael's, which reached the tournament's final defeating Loyola High School, fell short of the finish line. The players well bowled out for 93 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. At the award ceremony, St Karen's High School director Donald Gaulstaun congratulated the winners and players on both sides for their sportsmanship. The awards of the day were distributed among the winners and runner-up.

Harsh Raj of St Karen's High School was adjudged Man of the Match for scoring 46 runs but the best baller tag went to Martin Christopher of St Michael's High School. Chandramani of St Karen's High School was awarded for good work with his hands behind the stumps, with best wicketkeeper award. The best batsman and best fielder awards also went to St Karen's players Harsh Raj and Deepak Kumar, respectively.

Education mission

The Private Schools and Children Welfare Association and Rotary India Literacy Mission started the registration for Rotary India Global Dream, an initiative to teach illiterates across the state this summer vacation, on Saturday. The association president, Shamael Ahmed, said: "The purpose of this campaign is to educate the 1 lakh illiterate adults in Bihar. Students of classes VI-XII will be involved for the project during the coming summer vacations. The students, who register for the initiative, would be given book kits by the Rotary India Literacy Mission. The children will teach the adults with the help of the kits. Summer vacations of private schools would start from May 23 and students would get the kits before that."

The vice-president of Rotary India Literacy Mission, Kamal Sanghvi, said the campaign would be launched in other parts India soon.

Astronomy Day

Shri Krishna Science Centre organised a programme on Saturday to mark Astronomy Day. The day falls on April 25 but this year, the programme was deferred by a week because of the Nepal earthquake.

The programme started with a documentary on India's first Mars mission and the Mars Orbiter Mission, also called the Mangalyaan. The feature explained to participants how the orbiter was exploring and observing the red planet's surface features, morphology, mineralogy and the Martian atmosphere. Scientists, involved with the mission, were also heard in the documentary explaining the orbiter's functioning.
