Patna, July 13: With dad, an MLA of a ruling party away in Delhi, his 19-year-old son just wanted to have some fun.

But such was his zest for fun that Akhilesh Rai didn’t think twice before landing a series of slaps on a probationary police officer who had “dared” to stop the lad who was driving his father’s SUV in Patna yesterday afternoon.

Police today confirmed that the vehicle, a Scorpio, belonged to Chote Lal Rai, the JD (U) MLA from Parsa constituency in Saran district.

The incident had occurred at the Boring-Bailey Road crossing around noon on Tuesday, when several roads were shut for traffic owing to the visit of the Vice-President. Akhilesh wanted to go in a particular direction but was stopped by a constable and probationary sub-inspector, Manindra Singh. This sparked off a heated argument which ended with the boy slapping Singh repeatedly, saying he was the son of an MLA.

Singh lodged an FIR yesterday evening with the Kotwali police station.

Legislator Rai, having learnt of the incident, is on his way back to Patna. “He (Akhilesh) is just 19 years old. I know he committed a mistake. He shouldn’t have done that. But Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the MP from Bihar, was also moving along the same road at that time and he had stopped and tried to pacify the policeman and my son. My son had also apologised. A FIR shouldn’t have been lodged,” Rai told The Telegraph today.

The police said action would be taken against the youth. “He has committed an offence and action will be taken. He will be arrested. He has been booked under Section 353, which pertains to assault or criminal use of force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty. It is a non-bailable section. He will also be booked under Section 323 for voluntarily causing hurt,” an officer said.
