Six drown after game of cricket

Patna, Sept. 27: At least 10 persons, including six children, were feared drowned in separate incidents in Patna and Sheohar districts today.

Six children were drowned in the Ganga near Maner in Patna rural when, police said, they had gone to take a bath in the swollen river after playing cricket on the village outskirts. The residents said the children slipped into deep waters.

The six were identified as Ankit Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Raushan Kumar, Sonu Kumar, Manish and Harsha Kumar, all residents of Gangraha Sherpur village.

State disaster response force personnel were pressed into service to find the bodies but they hadn't been recovered till the time of filing this report. The six are aged between 12 and 16 years.

In the other mishap, four persons were feared drowned in Bagmati river in Sheohar district, around 130km north of Patna. Fifteen people were crossing the river on a country boat when the vessel capsized mid-stream. Ten of them swam to safety while national disaster response force personnel recovered the bodies of two victims. Rescue operations were on to find two more of the missing bodies.

Yesterday, three girls from a family - Lakshmi, Anshu and Manisha - had drowned in the Ganga in Buxar district. Their bodies were later fished out by local divers and handed over to the family after completing the legal formalities.
