Bhagalpur, May 14: The inauguration of Vijay Ghat bridge in the district on Sunday, around 270km east of Patna, would hardly benefit commuters owing to the incomplete approach road.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar would inaugurate the four-lane bridge on the Kosi.

The problem in completion of the approach road lies on both sides of a key rail overbridge, which would connect NH-31 with Vijay Ghat bridge.

Naugachia is located on the south of the rail overbridge and Pratap Nagar, which too falls in Bhagalpur district, is on its northern end.

After completion, the distance between Naugachia in Bhagalpur and Madhepura would come down to 50km.

Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL) had been given the job of constructing the bridge and the agency, in turn, had roped in the services of SP Singla Construction Company.

On the Pratap Nagar side, the approach road has not been completed because a high-tension line crosses the overbridge parallel to the railway tracks. The magnetic field of the high-tension line would be around 4.5metres, which would be dangerous for heavy vehicles to pass under it.

In case of the southern end, residents have not allowed construction of a road demanding more compensation for their land. Mohon Kumar Prajapati, project manager, SP Singla Construction Company, said: "Delay in land acquisition has held up the project otherwise the work on the approach road and the bridge would have been completed in 2014 itself."

BRPNNL executive engineer Sanjay Singh said: "A diversion has been made near the railway crossing till the completion of the work."

"Parts for the railway portion have already been dispatched from Chandigarh," said an official of the North East Frontier Railway's Katihar divisional railway manager's office.
