Patna, June 4: Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC) chairman Justice S.N. Jha today slapped a notice on Bihar director-general of police (DGP) Abhayanand, directing him to submit a detailed report about Saturday’s incident latest by June 15.
“The commission is satisfied that the failure of the administrative machinery to prevent the acts of the miscreants resulted in large-scale violation of the human rights of the people which the police utterly failed to protect,” reads the commission notice.
Last Saturday, some of the youths taking part in the funeral procession of slain Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Mukhiya went berserk and damaged public property in Patna, forcing residents to remain indoors for more than three hours. Police remained a mute spectator.
Footage on some news channels showed police personnel retreating from the scene while the youths damaged police pickets and vehicles.
The DGP is, on record, defending the police’s stand. He said any action by police would have worsened the situation. But BHRC does not appear to be impressed with this logic, evident from the words used by it in the notice served on the DGP.
