East Champaran police on Thursday night nabbed from from Birganj in Nepal a man who is accused of kidnapping and raping a minor girl for nearly three years.
Shamim Akhtar, a resident of Sheohar district, was absconding for two years. East Champaran superintendent of police Jitendra Rana said that acting on a tip-off, a joint police team of the district police and the Nepal police raided a house in Birganj and took Shamim into custody. The police also seized two pistols, cartridges, 20gm of heroin, 18 SIM cards, five cell phones and a number of fake identity cards and other documents.
Rana said Shamim - a suspected ISI operative who has earlier been involved in circulation of counterfeit currency notes and human trafficking - was living in a rented accommodation.
The girl, a resident of Dhaka police station area in East Champaran district, was kept illegally confined for three years and raped by the accused and his associates. She was found semi-conscious in a house around 26km northeast of Motihari district headquarters town on February 24 last year. She later tried to commit suicide, alleging police laxity in apprehending her tormenters.
