The district authorities in Rohtas demolished more than 140 stone crushers operating illegally at Gopibigha under the jurisdiction of Dehri police station in Rohtas district on Wednesday.
Rohtas superintendent of police Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said 148 stone crushers were destroyed during the special operation launched against illegal mining in the district. "It was part of the action against the stone-mining mafia who have been operating in violation of the ban order," he said.
Dhillon added that tough action would be initiated against those involved in illegal mining.
Agitated, a group of supporters of the stone-crusher owners pelted stones at the raiding team and tried to disrupt the demolition drive.
The operation lasted for four hours. During the drive on May 28, the supporters of crusher owners had opened fire at the raiding team. A sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar had survived the attack.
Dhillon said the police also seized two containers of country-made liquor from the spot.
The liquor was stored by the operators despite ban on liquor.
He added that instructions have been given to lodge complaints against the owners of the land for allowing stone crushers to operate.
"The drive against illegal mining and stone quarrying will continue," Dhillon added. The officials of the district administration and those of the forest department also took part in the drive. A source said that illegal mining was going on in Rohtas in protected forest areas despite a ban imposed by the state government. What has come as a surprise for the senior police officials is that the crushers unit start operations despite repeated raids in the past few months. "These crusher units have been running illegally in full knowledge of the district administration due to their links with those in power in the state administration," a police officer said.
