Preparations for the BJP’s Hunkar Rally is going on a war footing at Gandhi Maidan.

A mammoth 80ft stage, made of steel, is being built with the help of cranes and 50 workers opposite St Xavier’s School. It is for the first time that such a stage is being built at the Maidan for a political leader.

Scheduled on October 27, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, would take part in the much-awaited rally.

“It is the main stage from where Modiji will address the gathering. The elevation of the stage will be 10ft and only select few such as Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley would be allowed on the stage. It will be a folding type. Hard, unlike the normal podiums made of bamboos. The stage will be covered with waterproof sheets so that rain does not play spoilsport,” said Ratnesh Kumar, the in-charge of the stage-making.

It took seven trucks to bring pieces of the colossal stage from Delhi and the workers are sure of completing the dais by Thursday morning.

The barricading work is also going on in full swing and a huge tent, measuring around 2.5 lakh sqft is being erected at Gandhi Maidan.

Two scaffolds — one for Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders, the other one would be for MPs, MLAs and MLCs — are being made.

The BJP youth wing vice-president, Saket Singh, who has been assigned the task of making the seating arrangement, said: “Because of the high security, my job would be to ensure that people who occupy the seats do not move from one place to another. It would be difficult for any party worker to change seats once the leaders start making speeches.”

The wiring work, too, has started. However, LED television sets will be fixed on October 26. The party has planned to put around 30 LED screens so that the crowd could get a clear view of the stage and the leaders sitting on it.

Party general secretary Dharmendra Pradhan was found making rounds of the ground to supervise the ongoing work. He was found instructing party workers that Narendra Modi would first pay floral tributes to the new statue of Mahatma Gandhi before proceeding towards the main stage.

The district administration has also made adequate arrangements for the rally.

District magistrate N. Saravana Kumar said: “Adequate number of security personnel and magistrates will be deputed to control the crowd. We have also asked the party leaders to co-operate with the officials of the district administration. Many police officers in civil dress will be present to nab trouble-makers.”

On Gandhi Maidan, the district magistrate said: “We have provided them (the party) the ground for the rally. According to the rule, it is their responsibility to return the ground in its usual shape, otherwise the deposited amount will not be refunded.”

For the rally, even Gujarat police are in town to check the security preparations of the Bihar police.

Director-general of police Abhayanand said: “A deputy inspector-general-rank officer from Gujarat was in town to enquire about the security arrangements for Narendra Modi. The protocol states that the Bihar police will provide all kinds of security.”
