Police have failed to make any breakthrough in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old boy, who was shot dead by unidentified criminals at a medicine shop in the Naya Tola area on Tuesday night.

Originally from Muzaffarpur, the victim, Rakesh Kumar was a Class V student of a public school in the area.

He was staying with his father Vishnu Dayal Bharat, a mason by profession, who was at his native village, Mohjama, under Paroo police station in Muzaffarpur at the time of the incident.

Deputy superintendent of police (Town) Manoj Kumar Tiwary said Rakesh was attacked when he had been sitting in the medical store of one Prem Kumar, locally known as Doctor Sahib, around 7.30pm.

He was rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him “brought dead”.

Tiwary said Rakesh had returned to Patna from his native village about a week ago. “Property dispute is believed to be the reason behind the murder,” he said, adding that the prime suspect was absconding after the incident.

The station house officer of Pirbahore police station, S.A. Hashmi, said Rakesh’s father had a dispute with his brother, who was also staying in a rented accommodation in the same locality.

“A police team is being sent to Muzaffarpur to pick up the suspect,” he said.

During interrogation, the owner of the medical store said he spotted a youth aged about 20 years escaping after shooting at Rakesh.

“By the time he could react, the youth armed with lethal weapons managed to flee,” a police officer quoted him as saying.

The local residents blocked the road near National Institute of Technology in demand of immediate arrest of the killer. They also shouted slogans against the police and prevented them from lifting the body for postmortem.

DSP (Town) Tiwary said the investigating officer had been asked to obtain an arrest warrant from the court concerned against the suspect and initiate the process of attachment of property if he evaded arrest.
