The residents of Purana Bhojpur village in Buxar district have pledged to fight against clandestine sale of drugs and illicit liquor.

At a community meeting last week, the youths, panchayat leaders and a number of senior citizens of the hamlet took the oath to uproot such illegal practices from the village.

Islam, the son of village headman Jaibun Bibi, appealed to the residents to join hands and stand up against the illegal liquor trade. “A group of youths has come forward to lead the campaign and given eight days to the traders to close down their business. Legal action would be taken against those who fail to do as directed,” he said.

Dumraon sub-divisional police officer Nurul Haque told The Telegraph: “We are carrying out raids to arrest those involved in the illegal trade. The villagers have also informed us about the illegal liquor units. We would take action against the traders.”

Suresh Yadav, a resident of Purana Bhojpur, said: “Those who have deviated from the mainstream will be motivated to come back. Making money by doing such illicit business is never good.”
