Patna, July 1: The days of erratic power cuts in the city are numbered. Patna Electricity Supply Undertaking (Pesu) has undertaken a project to redistribute the power load on different grid sub-stations of the state capital to reduce overloading.

The project will be completed in a fortnight. Two new grids will also be constructed in Patna by April next year.

The development came as good news for many city residents.

Ajay Kumar from Rajiv Nagar area said: “It is a welcome step. If Pesu is successful in completing the project, it will make life easier for residents of west and central Patna.”

Others, however, were sceptical.

Saket Singh, resident of Gardanibagh, said: “I have serious doubts on whether Pesu would be able to carry out the project.”

Patna has six power grids of different capacities at Fatuha, Khagaul, Mithapur, Gai Ghat, Katra and Jakkanpur. These grids supply around 415MW to 450MW of power to the city. Overloading on the grids causes frequent power cuts.

“With a view to provide uninterrupted power supply to the consumers, Pesu will distribute equal load on all its grid sub-stations. We are trying our best to achieve the goal of load distribution within a fortnight. Once this process is completed, people will not be subjected to frequent load shedding,” Pesu general manager-cum-chief engineer SKP Singh told The Telegraph.

The electricity board is also constructing two new grids at Digha and Sampatchak. These would also lessen the burden on the existing grids.

Singh said: “Of the six grid sub-stations, the heaviest load is at Jakkanpur, Mithapur and Khagaul. “We have already transferred an additional load of around 12MW of the Khagaul grid to Jakkanpur. Similarly, Jakkanpur’s 10MW load will be shifted to the Mithapur grid.”

Pesu has completed the capacity expansion work of Gai Ghat grid, which would take care of an additional 15MW to 20MW of power of Mithapur. Khagaul grid supplies 120MW, Jakkanpur supplies 105MW while Mithapur, Gai Ghat and Katra supply 70MW each.

Once the Digha grid is complete, it can share the load of the Khagaul grid that supplies power to many important government buildings in the western part of the city.

The Digha grid is likely to be completed by August or September this year. It would not only reduce the pressure on the Khagaul grid but also supply power to sub-urban areas.
