Patna, April 16: Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (Pesu) has identified 274 spots in the state capital where cases of frequent burning of distribution transformers have been reported.
“We have carried out micro analysis of the vulnerable points in Patna where distribution transformer burning cases have been reported. In our analysis based on last year’s performance in summer season, we found that consumers at these places have to face problems due to DTs being overloaded resulting in burning of transformers,” Pesu general manager-cum-chief engineer S.K.P. Singh told The Telegraph.
“We are planning to rectify the problem either by installing additional transformers or by transferring the load to another transformer or by replacing worn-out low transmission (LT) lines,” Singh said.
In the first phase, Pesu would be taking corrective steps at 82 places, the most vulnerable points, by the first week of May. The same exercise would be completed in as many as 192 points by the end of June in the second phase, he added. When asked about the corrective steps to be taken to overcome the problems, Singh said: “Our officers will visit the place to ascertain the reason behind the burning of the transformers. They will find out whether it is because of overloading due to theft or dilapidated low transmission lines, leakage in transformer or inequitable distribution of load on transformers or illegal hooking.” Singh said if the transformer is over-loaded at a particular place and there are genuine consumers who pay regularly then the undertaking would install additional transformer and added that replacement would be carried out if frequent tripping is because of dilapidated LT lines.
Pesu would also try to transfer the load on a nearby under-loaded transformer if the load is heavy on a particular transformer in the identified area, added Singh.
“Since the load requirement is double in summer (between April and August), we receive bulk complaints of transformer burning. We are trying our best to address these problems and lessen the consumers’ problems in all the 24 sub-division of Pesu where three to four vulnerable places have been identified,” Singh said.
Asked about the cost the undertaking, the officer said if an additional transformer is installed then it would have to shell out Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh per transformer besides another Rs 50,000 would be required if two to three km of LT line is to be repaired.
About 37,00 transformers cater to the needs of around three lakh consumers in 10 division, from Patna City to Danapur, under Pesu.
