Patna, Dec. 14: National Institute of Technology-Patna submitted documents to the science and technology department today to take possession of the 125-acre land in Bihta for its new campus.
The science and technology department's proposal to release Rs 234 crore for the land has already been approved by cabinet and the agreement with NIT is likely to be signed on Monday.
Institute director Asok De said: "Once we get possession of land for construction of the new campus, we will urge the building construction department to construct the boundary wall of the new campus."
Sources said the new campus is likely to be completed in three to four years for an estimated Rs 700 crore.
In the lack of land for the new campus, the institute administration had been undertaking massive constructions on the Ashok Rajpath campus for infrastructure development including faculty buildings and hostels, but a member of NIT-Patna's board of governors said "the issue of pumping money at the old campus in the name of infrastructure development" was raised in several meetings.
"We know that our institute will be shifted to Bihta but we are strengthening the old campus as that will be developed as a city (secondary) campus," said director De. The old campus, spread over 25 acres, will run postgraduate and management courses and research activities.
