NOBLE CAUSE: Women attend the Akhil Bharatiya Marwari Mahila Sammelan at Ramdev Samudayik Bhavan in Patna City on Thursday. The members have devised a novel way to redress social evils. They have set up a mediation centre to deal with complaints such as differences between newlywed couples, family and property disputes. The conference was attended by around 1,000 members. The outgoing national president of the community, Meena Gupta, said 300 complaints were received by the organisation in the past two years. Of those, 290 were disposed of by the organisation. Meena added that the organisation was working for the uplift of economically backward people, including widows. The organisation has also adopted 10 children who are being imparted education at different schools in Patna City. All the expenses, including for food and lodging besides tuition, are borne by the organisation. The organisation has taken up measures to provide relief to senior citizens, apart from taking initiatives to encourage people to donate their eyes. Text by Uma Kant Prasad Varma, picture by Sachin
