Burnt alive

Purnea: Members of tribal community on Friday burnt a man to death in connection with alleged land dispute at Upran Number 1 area. The dead, identified as Jaynendra Mandal, was a resident of Kishanpur Balua panchayat and husband of the village head Chimo Devi.

Life term

Patna: Additional district and sessions judge Ramesh Chandra Singh on Friday gave life sentence to two persons — Sanjay Roy of Teena village in Nalanda and Pappu Kumar of Jaganpura in Patna — for the murder of one Akhilesh Roy, a resident of Khemanichak in Patna, on April 1, 2004.

Raids

Gaya: Forty-eight persons, including 28 men and 20 women, were arrested from the red light area at Sarai Mohulla during raids conducted by police on Thursday evening.

Celebration

Gaya: Around 500 devotees participated in the peace walk organised by Mahabodhi Society of India on Friday from Dhungeshwari to Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodhgayaon on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

Bhagalpur: A national-level three-day workshop on climate change and Indian horticulture would be organised at Bihar Agriculture University, Sabour, from Saturday. Scientists, meteorologists and other experts would take part in the event.

Murder verdict

Patna (PTI): Two persons — Sanjay Rai and Pappu Kumar — were sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case by additional district and sessions judge Ramesh Chandra Singh on Friday.hey were also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each after the court found them guilty of the murder of building material businessman Akhilesh Rai. According to the prosecution, the duo along with other persons had first stabbed Rai before shooting him from a close range on March 31, 2004. Rai succumbed to injuries at the Patna Medical College and Hospital later.

Praise

Patna: Governor D.Y. Patil on Friday said Indian Red Cross Society, Bihar, is a leading branch of the international organisation. It has around 1.25 lakh volunteers, who take active part in rescue work during natural calamities.

Force

Patna: The Union home ministry has withdrawn its decision to remove 12 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force from north Bihar. The decision, the letter stated, has been taken in the wake of the demand of the people of the area not to withdraw the central forces.

Arrest

Patna: Police on Friday caught five persons and recovered precious idols of Hindu deities, which were stolen from a temple in Begusarai.Those arrested have been identified as Sanjay Mahto, Kameshwar Yadav, Md Afzal, Md Ishararul and Md Nayeem.

Academy head

Patna: Sunit Kumar, a 1980 batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the new director-general of the proposed Bihar police academy at Rajgir in Nalanda district.
