Manu Maharaaj created space in an office, which he could hardly enjoy for about 15 days.
The 2005-batch IPS officer, upon being posted as Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) in 2013, ordered revamp of the office. For around 18 months, the office was given a facelift but the day it was handed over to the SSP - October 7, 2014 - Maharaaj was transferred.
When Maharaaj was reinstated on August 28, he was visibly happy with the sprawling SSP's chamber. "This whole office was under renovation since long and I had planned out most of the things. I wanted the office better and more spacious. However, the day it got ready, I was shifted," the officer told The Telegraph a couple of days after donning the post for the second time in his career. He was seen asking his men to ensure that the height of the working table be increased.
Now, with Maharaaj having been transferred yet again by the Election Commission on Friday to Gaya, it seems that the office is not meant for him - at least not in the next couple of months.
"Sir was posted as the Patna SSP from March 27, 2013, till October 7, 2014. At that time, the office was smaller in size than it is now. Everyday, more than 100 people come to meet the SSP with their grievances. The whole space used to get crammed with so many people trooping in. He had requested the higher-ups for renovation of the whole office, which had been accepted by the state government. By June 2013, the renovation had begun and the entire old structure was brought down. The SSP's office was shifted to another block in the police headquarters, which is located at a distance of around 100 metres from the present office. He had taken personal care to plan the new structure and was in touch with those building the new structure from time to time," a junior-ranking police officer posted at the SSP office said on Saturday.
The new structure, which has a proper shaded facility for those waiting outside, apart from an air-conditioned computer room, a room for constables who work at the office, a nicely lit-up space with some chairs among others, was ready by October 7, 2014.
However, things had got extremely difficult for Maharaaj by then because of the Dussehra stampede on October 3. He was removed from the post on October 6.
"Now the size of the SSP's chamber is bigger and all the SHOs of 75 police stations across Patna, all DSPs and SPs easily fit in. The office has been given a brighter look with false ceilings," another officer added.
