Patna, Feb. 9: A people’s representative of JD (U) today saw the ugly side of his party’s much-hyped good governance in Bihar when a govern- ment official allegedly threatened to eliminate him after misbehaving.
Karakat MLA Rajeshwar Raj had the bitter experience when he went to meet the sub-divisional officer of Bikramganj in Rohtas district.
The officer allegedly misbehaved with him and threatened to eliminate him.
The “shocked” MLA met Rohtas district magistrate Anupam Kumar at his Sasaram office and then spoke to Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary over phone and narrated the entire incident.
“I have sought an appointment with the chief minister because I want to tell him how a lower-rung officer misbehaved with me when I went to meet him at his office today,” Raj told The Telegraph over phone before leaving for Patna.
He said he would lodge a complaint against the sub-divisional officer, Rajesh Kumar, with the state human rights commission for misbehaving with a people’s representative in full public view.
The sub-divisional officer refuted the charge, saying the legislator was exerting pressure on him against lodging an FIR against his men involved in irregularities.
“I had asked the block development officer (BDO) concerned to lodge an FIR for anomalies in the implementation of the government schemes,” Rajesh said.
Sources said the MLA reached the sub-divisional officer’s office around 10am. When he entered Rajesh’s chamber around 10.30am and complained against large-scale irregularities in disbursement of funds under “old age pension” scheme and distribution of foodgrain among BPL families under Antodaya scheme, the sub-divisional officer reportedly turned furious.
“Who are you to ask these questions? I am not supposed to give you an explanation in this regard,” the MLA quoted the public servant as saying.
The sub-divisional officer allegedly did not stop here.
“I will just spend Rs 20 lakh and get you defeated in the elections,” the MLA quoted the officer as saying.
The legislator also said that the officer threatened him to get him eliminated by spending just Rs 2 lakh.
“Goli marwa dunga (I will get you shot),” the MLA quoted the sub-divisional officer as saying.
The heated argument took place between the MLA and the sub-divisional officer in the presence of the legislator’s supporters.
A large number of people gathered outside the office of the sub-divisional officer to watch the high-voltage drama.
Rohtas superintendent of police Vikas Vaibhav said both the MLA and the sub-divisional officer had submitted written complaints to Bikramganj police station.
“We are verifying the matter,” he said, adding that an FIR would be lodged only after going through the complaints of both the parties.
The district magistrate said: “There is nothing serious about the matter. It will be settled. The media is trying to blow the incident out of proportions.”
Sources said the genesis of Wednesday’s incident lied in a camp organised at the block headquarters four days ago.
The sub-divisional officer received complaints about non-disbursement of ration cards and old age pension among the beneficiaries of Mani panchayat there.
He immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter and asked the block development officer to lodge an FIR against the persons responsible for the non-disbursement of ration cards and old age pension.
Sources said the MLA’s men were assigned the task of distributing ration cards among BPL people.
“The MLA was pressuring me not to take action against his men,” the sub-divisional officer said.
