Patna: Barring stray showers, the monsoon is likely to hit a lull till Monday in most parts of the state except for the western districts, and gain momentum from Tuesday onwards.

"A low pressure area has formed over northwest Bay of Bengal which is set to develop as a well-marked area. This would lead to reduced supply of moisture over Bihar and hence not much rainfall activity is expected in most parts of the state till Monday," Patna Met office scientist Anand Shankar said on Sunday.

He said that the low pressure area was expected to dissipate by Monday evening after which favourable conditions would be created for good rainfall in Bihar.

Last week too a low pressure area had developed over Odisha, leading to the monsoon weakening in Bihar. Once that weather phenomenon dissipated, Bihar got good rainfall from Thursday evening onwards till Saturday.

The three days of good rainfall has also brought down the deficiency percentage; now Bihar is among those states that have received normal rainfall this monsoon.

Till August 22, Bihar had received 564.4 mm, which was 22 per cent below the normal of 720.1 mm. The deficiency was at 19 per cent on August 25. The state received 608.7 mm of rainfall against the normal of 754.6 from June 1 to August 25.

In meteorological parlance, rainfall is said to be normal if the departure-from-normal percentage is up to 19 per cent.

While showers are not expected before Tuesday in most parts of the state, the western districts of Bihar are expected to get good rainfall even during this period.

"A cyclonic circulation is hovering over Uttar Pradesh and adjoining parts of western Bihar. Hence, several places in the western parts of Bihar are expected to get good rainfall," Shankar said.

He said that the remaining parts of the state would get good rainfall Tuesday onwards as the monsoon trough line, which was passing through Gaya on Sunday, was expected to shift north.

The monsoon trough line is an imaginary line extending from west to east and rainfall happens in areas south of it.
