Patna, Jan. 31: Social activist Anna Hazare today questioned Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s commitment towards fighting corruption, casting a shadow on latter’s possible candidature as Prime Minister.

“I want to ask Modi why he has not made Gujarat free of corruption and why he did not bring a bill for setting up Lokayukta in his state,” he said in reply to questions by reporters.

What people say about Modi was not his concern, too. “Anybody can become a Prime Minister. It makes no difference. The Prime Minister should be elected by the people The present Parliament also does not function democratically,” said Anna, who launched Jantantra Morcha here yesterday. “At present, the bureaucracy is dominating over democracy,” he said, adding that his party would start a nationwide campaign for “true democracy”.

“Both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi can no more be trusted to bring a stringent Lokpal bill to root out corruption. Had they been committed to the issue it would not have taken two years to take a concrete decision in this regard,” Anna said while describing the Lokpal Bill approved by the Union cabinet as “a farce”.

Anna, however, said his struggle was not aimed at removing any government. “Governments come and go. It is the political system, which has to be changed,” he said.

He said he would extend his agitation in four states in February. “The states include Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. I will announce the names of two other states soon.”

Reacting to the “flop show” comments of the RJD chief, Lalu Prasad, he said: “People tend to see things in accordance to the colour of their glasses.”

Reacting to a question on his silence in Maharashtra whenever anti-Bihar agitation is launched by the MNS chief, Raj Thackeray, Anna said his statement did not matter.

“I have never said anything against people from Bihar. In fact, I have started my agitation from Patna,” he said.
