An “expert” advice from deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi left an unemployed youth shocked and disappointed at the same time.

“Why do you want to do a job? It is better if you start a business. How much will you earn in a job, Rs 10,000 or Rs 15,000, not more. I suggest you to start your own business. Do not run after a job, I don’t think it will help you,” Modi advised Amit Kumar during his weekly janata darbar on Tuesday.

The suggestion came on a plea by Amit’s father, Sanjay Kumar Gupta, who wanted the minister to help the youth with job opportunities. “Sir, my son has done a MBA and is looking for a job. Kindly do something for him,” Gupta told Modi.

Amit (26) handed over his MBA degree to Modi and said: “Sir, have a look at my degree. I have secured good marks in my MBA course.” Amit has secured 72 per cent in his MBA from Zakir Hussain Learing Institute, Patna.

The deputy chief minister, however, was not much impressed with the youth’s academic credentials and suggested that he focus on starting an enterprise of his own.

Amit, who has completed his graduation from Sher Shah College, Sasaram in Rohtas, was speechless after he heard suggestion. He did not say a single word and left with his parents.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the minister’s advice, Amit told The Telegraph: “How can I start my own business? Neither do I have any experience, nor do I have any knowledge about running a business. I don’t even have the capital to invest in any sector. How can he give such a suggestion? Does it mean that everyone is supposed to run a business instead of looking a job?”

He added: “It was really shocking for me to hear such a suggestion, I have done an MBA and I want to do a job. I might think about starting my own business in future when I would have the money to invest in some sector, but right now I need a job.”

The youth added: “I do not agree with his (Modi’s) advice. Modiji might have his own point of view over starting a business. As far as I am concerned, everyone must do a job before starting a business.”

Even Amit’s father was disappointed with the suggestion. He said: “I want my son to do a job first. He does not have the maturity to start his own business. We come from a middle-class family. How can anybody expect us to start a business? It’s not possible at all. Modiji gave a suggestion which was not expected of him.”

When Modi was asked the reason for offering such a suggestion, he told The Telegraph: “It’s my personal view that people should become job providers instead of job seekers. People in Bihar have a different mentality. Even though they are financially sound, they want to do government jobs. I do not understand the logic behind it? Why cannot they start their own business instead of running after jobs?”

Amit had come all the way from Sasaram, around 170km from Patna. Even his mother Manju Devi was disappointed with Modi’s suggestion.
