Schools in the city are gearing up to extend first-hand demo classes on earthquake safety measures to students on Wednesday after remaining closed for two days as precautionary measure in the calamity aftermath.
The schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday on the state government's direction after the Saturday tremor.
Patna district public relations officer R.B. Sahay said on Tuesday that there was no fresh order to extend the closure of the city schools due to the earthquake.
B. Vinod, principal, Delhi Public School, said: "Three teachers of our school had done their education in disaster management and they have prepared a plan for building evacuation in three minutes. A demo regarding the same would be done in the classes."
The other schools also plan to give tips to their students about earthquake during the morning assembly and classroom activities. Albert Abraham, vice-principal, St Xavier's High School, said: "We are going to conduct a theoretical class on earthquake during the morning assembly. All the teachers have been instructed to ensure safety of students if any more tremors are felt in the coming days. At this situation, junior students will definitely feel panicked and started to cry but the assigned teacher tried to calm them and evacuate the building as soon as possible."
The school administration is also organising a mock drill on the school campus this week. "The drill will be conducted by National Disaster Response Force commander Vijay. He and his team will give proper instructions to the students about earthquake safety measures," added Albert.
Brother Satheesh, principal, Loyola High School, said the school would remain open. The principal said: "In view of the tremors, which were felt on Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening, we have decided to extend tips to our students. National Disaster Response Force team has already taught the students about the safety measures. We just need to remind them during classroom activities."
"The administration has planned to organise a mock drill in the school to create awareness against the natural calamity and handle the crisis in an effective manner. On Wednesday, the teachers have decided to spread awareness about the after-care and handling of the situation, and how to minimise damage in case of any such emergency. Teachers will also give demonstration on evacuation of building," said Peter Arockiasamy, principal, St Michael's High School.
Anshuman, a Class VII student of Loyola High School, said: "We learnt how to be safe during the drill activity took place in February this year. When there's an earthquake, we have to go down on the floor under the table or take shelter at the corner of building so we will not get hurt. It also teaches us to be quiet and calm at this disastrous situation."
Garima Nidhi, another student of Class IX of St Michael's High School, said: "Mock drill and practical knowledge of safety measures are the need of the hours. I am happy that school is going to give tips on disaster safety methods. I can also teach others about it."
