Media gag protest

The Left parties will organise a human chain here on Tuesday to protest what they called an attempt to curtail the freedom of the press and the people's right to information with regard to CBI investigation into the Muzaffarpur Balika Grih (short stay home for girls) case in which at least 34 minor girls were alleged to have been repeatedly raped and tortured.

Patna: The Left parties will organise a human chain here on Tuesday to protest what they called an attempt to curtail the freedom of the press and the people's right to information with regard to CBI investigation into the Muzaffarpur Balika Grih (short stay home for girls) case in which at least 34 minor girls were alleged to have been repeatedly raped and tortured.

A meeting was held at Janshakti Bhavan, the state headquarters of the Communist Party of India (CPI), on Sunday to chalk out the details. Representatives of CPI-ML (Liberation), CPM, Forward Bloc, Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) were present.

Senior leaders of the Left parties, including CPI-ML (Liberation) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, will attend the protest and will be a part of the human chain.

CPI state secretary Satya Narayan Singh said: "We are going to organise a joint protest because the threads of the cases pertaining to Muzaffarpur Balika Grih and other shelter homes seem to be connected to the higher-ups in the state government, including politicians and bureaucrats. On the other hand, Patna High Court has gagged the media from reporting on the Muzaffarpur case. We respect the judiciary and want it to keep things transparent."

Singh added that the Left parties are agitated because there seems to be an effort to keep the public away from information related to the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.

"We are agitated that there are efforts to keep information pertaining to the developments in the Muzaffarpur case away from the public because it creates pressure on the state government and creates discontent among the people due to the deteriorating governance and law and order in the state," the CPI state secretary added.
