Patna: Sexagenarian Ramdeo Sharan (name changed), a Patna resident who is suffering from Parkinson's disease (a central nervous system disorder that affects movements), was advised by a topmost neurosurgeon on Thursday to get a brain pacemaker implanted in his brain to get rid of the disorder.

According to doctors, while a majority of patients afflicted with Parkinson's disease are treated with medicines, for some, the drugs stop working after which a brain pacemaker can be the solution.

Neurosurgeon Dr VP Singh, chairman of the neurosciences wing of Medanta the Medicity hospital, Gurgaon, advised Ramdeo to get a brain pacemaker implanted to cope with the disorder.

Ramdeo was among 20 patients who turned up at the outpatient department (OPD) of Gurgaon's Medanta the Medicity at Apollo Trauma Centre (situated in front of the Jai Prabha Hospital in Kankerbagh.

Singh, who is credited with starting the Gamma Knife Unit and epilepsy surgery programme at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Delhi, is considered among the leading neurosurgeons in the country. He will provide services in Medanta the Medicity's neurosciences OPD on the first Friday of every month.

In case he can't, he would be available at the OPD on the second Friday. "It is a big thing for residents that they would be getting the services of one of the topmost neurosurgeons in the country. Earlier, there was fear among doctors and they chose not to come to Bihar to provide their consultation but things have changed now. Dr VP Singh expressed his desire to provide his services in Patna's OPD. We are hoping residents would be benefited by the OPD," said medical director, Bihar and Jharkhand, Medanta the Medicity, Dr Ravi Shankar Singh.

The OPD consultation fee had been fixed at Rs 600.

Neurosurgeon Singh spoke about the advanced treatment facilities available at the Gurgaon hospital. "Such as for epilepsy patients, there are targeted surgeries in which the portion of the brain which has got damaged is cut out during surgery. We use neuro-navigation technique which works like a GPS through which we can map every portion of the brain and conduct surgery," said Dr Singh.
