Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) will host a two-day national seminar on child rights and law, supported by the Bihar field office of Unicef, in Patna from Saturday.

The law cradle will collaborate with Bihar State Commission for Protection of Child Rights for the seminar.

Addressing a news meet on Thursday, CNLU vice-chancellor A. Lakshminath said Justice Altamas Kabir of the Supreme Court would address the inaugural session of the seminar on May 5.

Education minister P.K. Shahi and chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Shanta Sinha, will also attend the inaugural session.

The seminar would be aimed at looking at the constitutional guarantees, specifically meant for children, the organisers said. It would also focus on discussing the rights of children as enjoyed by any other adult citizen in the country.

Lakshminath said: “The emphasis (of the seminar) would be on the various issues of child protection like the legislations and measures adopted by the state.”

The vice-chancellor stressed that the main objective of the seminar would be to understand the importance of child rights, the progression of Indian laws with special reference to child protection and also develop an understanding of the juvenile justice act.

To facilitate greater participation and focused discussion, the seminar would be divided into various segments, including child rights and protective legislations, socio-cultural dimensions of child marriage and role of child labour act in the context of the right to education.

Child rights practitioners and activists, judges, lawyers, academics, researchers and civil society members are expected to take part in the two-day seminar. It would be organised at Maurya.

S.P. Singh, the registrar of the law institute, said: “CNLU will work as a catalyst for the two-day-long seminar, as it would bring key stakeholders together for a meaningful dialogue through the proposed seminars.”

He added: “Once the seminar is over, its results would help explore the possibilities of setting up a child rights resource centre in Bihar with the active support and participation of civil society organisations.”
