Ranchi: Former Bihar chief minister and RJD president Lalu Prasad was on Saturday admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for the treatment of piles-related problems. Doctors at Birsa Munda Central Jail, where Lalu is currently lodged after being convicted in two fodder scam cases by a special CBI court, referred him to RIMS.
Lalu, who reached RIMS in the afternoon under heavy police protection, was first taken to the cardiology department where he was examined by Dr Praveen Jha. He was later treated for piles. Lalu was accompanied by Tej Pratap, who reached Ranchi in the afternoon.
"I have come to meet my father after I heard about his health problem," Tej Pratap told reporters outside RIMS.
The media was prohibited from entering the hospital for security reasons while the hospital administration refused to divulge anything about Lalu's health. Meanwhile, the special CBI court of Shivpal Singh on Saturday again deferred verdict in the fodder scam case RC 38A/96.
The court was supposed to deliver its judgment on Friday in the case related to fraudulent withdrawals of around Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka district treasury between December 1995 and January 1996.
Among the 29 accused facing trial are Lalu and Jagannath Mishra, another former chief minister of Bihar.
"The judge is attending a two-day training programme of Jharkhand Judicial Academy for judicial officials and public prosecutors at Dhurwa starting today (Saturday). We will get clarity on the judgment date only on Monday," advocate Prabhat Kumar, who appeared on behalf of Lalu, said.
On Friday, the special CBI court had accepted Lalu's petition demanding the trial three senior officials posted in the Bihar accountant-general's office in the 1990s.
