Patna, Sept. 13: The mystery death of Ram Chandra Sharma in the lock-up of Dehri police station in Rohtas district last Saturday took a new turn after his family members identified the victim as Shankar Choudhary and not Sharma as earlier claimed by the police.

The victim, a resident of Gopiganj village under Gorari police station in Rohtas district, was a rickshaw-puller.

The victim’s daughter, Seema Devi, turned up at Dehri police station today and lodged a complaint alleging that the police personnel posted at Dehri police station had demanded Rs 10,000 for releasing her father.

Five policemen, including station house officer Ramesh Kumar Singh, have already been suspended in connection with the incident.

Though the family members tried to contact him over his phone, his cellphone was found switched off. The victim’s wife, Jay Shree Devi, along with two sons and four daughters, reached the police station after someone told them about the tragic incident. “By the time we reached here, his body was disposed of by the police,” she said.

In the complaint, she alleged that her father had contacted the family when he was lodged in the police lock-up at Dehri police station.

“The station house officer is demanding Rs 10,000 for releasing me,” there were the last words that Choudhary told his family. “Before he could reveal anything more, the mobile was snatched from him,” Seema said.

“The policemen responsible for the death of my father should not be spared,” Seema wrote in the complaint submitted to Dehri police.
