Inmates settle score on field - Prisoners play one-day cricket match at jail to mark Bihar Divas

Patna, March 23: Prisoners are known to fight within the four walls of the prison over war of supremacy.

However, on Tuesday they exhibited tremendous sportsman spirit at a one-day cricket match played at the special central jail in Bhagalpur as part of Bihar Divas celebrations across the state.

From murder convicts to kidnappers, all took part in the 20-over match played on the ground inside the jail.

While Chandan Singh, a convicted prisoner of Nalanda district serving sentence for kidnapping in the high security prison, was the captain of one team, Kedar Yadav, a murder convict of Banka district, led the other team.

Above the inmates, who are lodged in the two wards of the prison, were the audience, who clapped on every good shot of the batsmen. Good bowling received wide applause too. Interestingly, the umpires for the match were selected among the prisoners.

At the end of the match the players shook hands with each other and congratulated for their performance. “Well played,” shouted 60-year-old murder convict of Jehanabad district Mritunjay Kumar after the match.

The winner as well as the runner up teams were given away prizes by the jail superintendent.

“The cricket match has been organised as part of the Bihar foundation day celebrations,” said superintendent of Bhagalpur Central Jail Jitendra Kumar.

He said several competitions like volleyball match, badminton and 100-metre race were also organised on the occasion. Kumar said the celebration kicked off with lighting 99 diyas on Tuesday and would continue till March 24.

Total 1,106 convicted prisoners are lodged in the jail.
