Gynaecologists from across the country would deliberate on infertility and unsafe motherhood at a three-day conference beginning December 7.

Around 500 doctors are scheduled to take part in the 23rd conference of the Bihar Obstetric and Gynaecological Society, Patna.

The event will focus on infertility, difficulties in obstetric operations and use of contraceptives, said Anita Singh, a gynaecologist and president of the society, on Tuesday.

Singh said infertility and unsafe motherhood are challenges for doctors. “The three-day conference will give a chance to doctors from across the country to share their knowledge. The event will also highlight the latest technologies being used by gynaecologists.”

“Besides infertility, unsafe motherhood and obstetric operations, the conference will also deal with topics like hepatitis in pregnancy, emergencies in liver disorders, pregnancy with ventricular septal defect, pregnancy after renal transplant and pancreatitis. Experts would also discuss fertility enhancing surgeries and role of maternal nutrition in this seminar,” said Alka Pandey, the secretary of the medical society.

Amiya Kumari Sinha, another member of the society, said maternity mortality rate had come down in the state but there was a lot of scope for improvement.

Sinha said infertility had become one of the major problems among women today.

“There are many ways by which a doctor can help women who are facing infertility problem. But awareness needs to be raised. Many don’t know that the problem is curable. In this three-day conference, veteran doctors will throw some light how infertility could be treated with advanced technology,” added Sinha.

“Noted gynaecologists, including S. Suresh from Chennai, Bhaskar Pal from Calcutta, Geeta Ganguly from Calcutta, Suchitra Pandit from Mumbai and others, are expected to tale part in this conference,” added Pandey.
