Patna/Purnea, July 18: A first information report was lodged today against Md Riyazul Khan alias Akash Sheikh and Mehtab Alam, suspected to be members of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji), for violating the Foreigners’ Act even as police were probing if the two had any links with the July 13 serial blasts in Mumbai.
Riyazul Khan was arrested on Saturday while Mehtab Alam was nabbed on Sunday and lodged at Pauwakhali police station in Kishanganj district.
The two suspected members of Huji have been booked under Section 14 (staying without valid visa or passport) of the Foreingers’ Act and sections 212 (harbouring a person) and 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Both Riyazul and Mehtab were brought to Kishanganj civil court under tight security and produced in the court of chief judicial magistrate Sanjay Kumar Upadhyay, who later remanded them in judicial custody for two weeks.
Kishanganj superintendent of police (SP) Ranjeet Kumar Mishra said Riyazul claimed to be a resident of Bangalore. “The addresses in Bangalore and elsewhere given by him were found to be incorrect. One thing that we can say now is that he is not an Indian,” Mishra added.
He said the police had seized a diary written in Marathi, three mobiles, two SIM cards, details of bank accounts and several contact numbers from his possession.
“These are under investigation,” Mishra said, adding that the police have got some “vital clues” from Riyazul during the interrogation.
“We can’t share every information with the media,” the SP said, adding that if required, the two would be taken on police remand for further interrogation.
The police believe Riyazul has a Bangladeshi link and he entered Indian territory illegally. “That is why we have booked him under the Foreigners Act,” an investigating officer said, adding that his links with the Mumbai blasts were yet to be established.
Sources said the three SIM cards in Riyazul’s possession had a balance of Rs 80,000. The diary seized from him contained telephone and mobile numbers of several persons from Bihar and Jharkhand. “The call details of the mobiles will provide some information about his contacts,” an investigating officer said.
Sources at the state police headquarters said a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to visit Kishanganj to question the two suspects. Police said Mehtab, who had provided a portion of his house to Riyazul on rent, worked as a decorator at marraige ceremonies.
Mehtab admitted that Riyazul had taken a room on rent in his house. He also admitted that Riyazul had gone somewhere for some time and returned a week ago.
