Police have registered names of 50 students of Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT) in the list of hooligans for allegedly indulging in criminal activities on and off the campus in the past five years.
Sources said the character certificates issued to them by Barhampura police would have a mention about the charges. The certificate is essential for the students to get jobs.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar said the students had been identified for indulging in loot, arson, hooliganism and violence on and off the campus.
The SSP added that they had sought permission from the police headquarters to reopen cases of violence involving MIT students. Two deputy superintendents of police, Arshad Zama and Upendra Prasad, were assigned with the task of supervising 18 cases pending at the Barhampura police station. The officer said he has asked his deputies to file chargesheets against 12 of the 50 students who had allegedly assaulted Daudpur Kothi residents, vegetable sellers outside the MIT gate and college employees. He added that these students would be asked to surrender failing, which their parents’ properties would be attached.
Senior police officers, including additional director-general of police (Tirhut) Gupteshwar Pandey and deputy inspector-general of police Shushil Khopde, and district magistrate Santosh Kumar Mall have asked acting principal Surendra Kumar to restrain the students. A section of MIT students clashed with another group on December 3 in presence of a senior teacher. Surendra said the police action was justified. He added that the police should have taken up the matter earlier. A civil engineering teacher said many of his colleagues have stopped taking classes fearing threat to their lives.
The disciplinary committee of the college held meetings on December 6 and 10 and decided to initiate disciplinary action against the unruly students. The Barhampura police intensified patrolling around MIT and are conducting search operations at the hostels everyday. The police also found hockey sticks and iron rods from the hostels.
