The economic offences unit (EOU) has filed a chargesheet against suspended IPS officer Alok Kumar in an extortion case.

Senior deputy superintendent of police of the EOU Amritendu Shekhar filed the chargesheet against Alok, a 1997 batch IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, in the special vigilance court in Muzaffarpur on Monday.

Alok was accused of demanding Rs 10 crore as extortion from one Tunnaji Pandey, a Siwan resident and a representative of a liquor unit in Uttar Pradesh.

In August 2012, Alok was promoted to the deputy inspector-general of police rank after which he was posted in Saran. An extortion case was filed against him in January 2013 following which he was removed from the post one month later and departmental proceedings were initiated against him.

The chargesheet was filed after the general administration department secretary Vinod Kumar Sinha granted permission to the investigating agency to prosecute the officer.

A senior police officer of the EOU confirmed the filing of the chargesheet against the officer, who was repatriated to his parent cadre on the recommendation of the state police headquarters (Bihar). “Alok Kumar, who earlier served as SSP of Patna, is currently on bail,” he added.

The complaint was lodged against Alok on the directive of director-general of police Abhayanand after Pandey sought his intervention. Pandey had also disclosed the names of Deepak Kumar Abhishek, Ajay Dubey and Umesh Singh, who were allegedly working as middlemen of the IPS officer. They were intercepted by the EOU team while they were going to hand over a huge sum as token money to Alok.

Sources in the police headquarters said Ajay Dubey, Umesh Singh and Abhishek were arrested from Patna by the EOU team on January 20, 2013 and subsequently quizzed by senior police officials. The police had also seized Rs 5 lakh in cash from the possession of Ajay and Abhishek.

The state government had informed the senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir about the illegal acts of the officer, who was repatriated to his parent cadre.

“The trial would begin once the charges are framed against the officer concerned,” a senior vigilance bureau officer said. The investigating officer had also recorded the statement of subordinate staff of the IPS officer in the case.
