Patna, Oct. 11: The state government is mulling to create a registered society for Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park and expedite development activities at the zoo.

This proposed registered society would be able to undertake various development activities using its own resources, including donations from individuals and organisations.

“The proposed registered society would have two components — the governing body and the executive committee, comprising around 10 members. Together, they would be able to generate revenue and undertake development activities in the zoo. The proposed society would also help in development and working of any new botanical garden or other wildlife projects in the state,” said a senior official of state environment and forest department.

Sources said at times, many development projects in the zoo are caught in limbo owing to official protocol before the actual execution. “At present, even a minor renovation inside the zoo requires permission of the state environment and forest department, which then co-ordinates with other departments, including the state finance department and the labour department among others, before final approval. This takes up a lot of time before the actual execution is initiated. However, the proposed registered society would be a self-governing body,” said the official.

“The society would also utilise funds generated through donations. “Among sources of revenue, the proposed registered society may also receive donations from individuals and organisations. Such funds would be solely utilised for development related activities,” said the official.
