Patna, Aug. 2: Magadh Mahila College celebrated its 2nd induction meet on Monday.

The new administration started the induction meet in 2009 to help the students know their faculty and get familiarised with them.

The chief guest of the ceremony, Shaileshwar Satiprasad (former head of the department of English, Patna University) said: “Students are the wealth of a college and if the teachers are known to be good teachers, then it is only because the students are good.”

The general secretary of the institution, Sunita Shrivastava, the assistant general secretary, Anupama, and treasurer, Nahid Parveen, organised the programme. Jayshree Mishra, the head of the department of history, extended a warm welcome to the new students.

Mishra said: “The students are fortunate to get admission in this prestigious institution and it is the students’ responsibility to carry forward the legacy of the institution.” Jayshree Mishra then spoke of the golden history of the institution. The institution was established in 1946. On July 26, 1949, a milestone was reached when the renowned personality Jagdish Chandra Mathur named this institution, Magadh Mahila College, from 59 students in 1946 to 1947, it has now enrolled around 4,000 students.

This institution has paved the way for women’s education. Mishra said: “This institution has given many greats like Nilima Kumari who ranked 23rd in the IAS examination this year, Anita Kumari has been selected as a senior Army officer.

Priyanka Verma, (a student of BBA 3rd year) has been awarded “NCC best cadet” in Bihar and Jharkhand this year and she will be going to Sri Lanka under the youth exchange programme. Many students of this university are getting jobs in the multi-national companies like Infosys, Wipro and various other reputed firms.

In 1948, science stream started and in 1970, almost all subjects were offering honours degree. Due to unavailability of adequate teachers, postgraduation degrees started only in few subjects such as economics, sociology, psychology, home science and chemistry. In 2000, bachelors degree in computer application was established and it has produced students who are getting good job opportunities.

Principal Dolly Sinha (founder of BCA department and co-ordinator) said: “The fame of the college is not due to its infrastructure but its students. Shashi Sharma (head of the department political science) said: “The college had its own canteen, cafeteria and library.” She added: “There are 36 courses running here in which vocational courses like postgraduation diploma in computer applications (PGDCA) and two in the social science (postgraduate diploma in women and child education and in population study). Some new courses in career building and personality development like career management in counselling field are being added.”

The NSS department has done an excellent job in the social work arranging blood donation camps in slum areas and taking care of hygiene and participation of students for these programmes is good. At the end of the ceremony, Archana Katiyar gave the vote of thanks.
