Patna, Aug. 17: A 22-year-old boarder of a girls’ hostel in the state capital today hanged herself to death in a room.

The girl, identified as Ashubala, was a resident of Katihar and a student of Patna Excellent Coaching Centre located on Road Number 7 in Rajendra Nagar area under Kadamkuan police station. Ashubala used to reside at Subah Giri’s Hostel on Road Number 3 in the same area. She shared the room with another inmate of the hostel.

Sources said the girl had returned to the hostel last evening. She had gone home to celebrate Raksha Bandhan.

“This morning, the girl left at 7 for her coaching classes and came back at around 10am. By then, her roommate Punita, had already left. She came back around 12noon and found the door to the room locked from inside. When repeated knocks failed to elicit any response, the girls broke open the door. They found Ashubala hanging. They informed the police,” an officer at Kadamkuan police station said.

No suicide note has been recovered, the officer added.

The girl’s father, Jai Kant Rai, is a businessman.

“The family lives in Larkaniya Tola area of Katihar. At present, it is difficult to state the cause of her death. The family has been informed about the incident and they are on their way to Patna. The body has been sent to Patna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem,” the officer said. Sources said the girl had been depressed for sometime and there could be a romantic angle to the unfortunate incident.

“We spoke to some of the other girls of the hostel in this connection. According to them, the girl was very quiet and used to cry sometimes. She used to say that she wanted to be home, which was far-off. We believe the girl was under some pressure and wanted to go home. But we have not been able to reach any conclusion yet,” the officer said. The police added that they were waiting for the family to arrive in Patna. The family members could be questioned as well. “The parents are likely to know something. We will question them,” the officer added.
