Patna: Bihar's jardalu mango, katarni paddy and magahi paan were formally registered in the geographical indication (GI) tag registry on March 28.
"All the three products of Bihar have now got international recognition," state agriculture minister Prem Kumar said on Friday.
The GI tag is given to a product that owes its uniqueness or reputation to its place of origin.
For getting the tag, an application has to be filed in the office of the controller general of patents, designs and trademarks.
The GI tags have been given to the Bhagalpuri Jardalu Aam Utpadak Sangh of Mahesi village under Sultanganj block of Bhagalpur district, Bhagalpur Katarni Dhan Utpadak Sangh of Jagdishpur village in the district, and Magahi Paan Utpadak Kalyan Samiti of Deori village in Nawada district.
Minister Kumar said efforts would be made for GI tags to the state's shahi litchi and makhana (fox nut).
According to agriculture department sources, a person named Ali Khan Bahadur had first planted a jardalu mango tree in the Bhagalpur region. The light yellow mango has a distinct aroma.
The katarni paddy is known for its long and thin grain and aroma, while the magahi betel - the leaf of which is known for its softness and taste - is grown in Nawada, Aurangabad and Gaya districts of Bihar.
