Patna: If nuances of meteorology baffle you, there is an opportunity to get the answer to all such doubts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will organise a five-day event starting from January 15 to mark its 143rd foundation day.
The event has been organised in the form of an exhibition in which details about all services provided by the IMD would be provided. "This is for the first time that IMD foundation day programme is being organised in Patna in the form of an exhibition," Patna Met office meteorologist Sandeep Kumar said on Friday.
The IMD came into existence in 1875 and to begin with, its headquarters was located at Calcutta. Later, the headquarters was shifted to Shimla and then to Pune and at present its headquarters is located in New Delhi. IMD provides different weather related services which include daily forecast, details about monsoon and other events like cyclones, earthquakes and others.
The exhibition would be held at two locations in the city where IMD offices are located. The exhibition would be held at Doppler Weather Radar station, Anisabad, and the Meteorological Observatory located at Patna airport.
At the meteorological observatory centre, visitors would be made aware of the techniques that are used for measuring diurnal temperature, rainfall and others and also they would get an opportunity to know the functioning of automated weather station which collects weather related information using sensors.
At the Doppler Weather Radar Station, visitors would be made aware of the functioning of the radar which helps the weathermen in coming out with forecast about the likely weather conditions.
"We have decided to make this exhibition an interactive one and our officials would be deputed at both the places to answer the questions of visitors related to the techniques used by us and also about the nuances of the weather forecasting," Sandeep said.
The exhibition has been named "Weather and climate services of IMD" and on all the five days, visitors would be able to visit the two venues between 10.30am and 5pm.
