Keep raincoats and umbrellas handy next couple of days. The rain god appears to be in a mood of showering some mercy on the rain-deficient city on Monday and Tuesday.

Weathermen predicted that the city might receive light to moderate rainfall in the next couple of days. There is a possibility of thundershowers also.

The residents should not be worried over the rain forecast. They should soak themselves in the shower as they did on Sunday.

The Ganga would not swell because of the precipitation. Authorities claimed that the river water level was expected to be static over the next two days and decline thereafter.

Sunday’s rain in Patna and several other places in the state were caused by a twin weather system in the region — an upper air cyclonic circulation over Bihar and neighbourhood extending up to 3.1km above mean sea level, and the eastern tip of the monsoon trough passing through Bhagalpur.

Satellite images from Kalpana-1 satellite showed dense cover of convective clouds all over Bihar and neighbouring states, including Bengal and Odisha, around 6pm on Sunday.

“Patna is expected to receive light rainfall over the next two days because of an upper air cyclonic circulation and favourable position of the trough line. While the western tip of the monsoon trough line was over the foothills of Himalayas, its eastern part was passing across Bhagalpur and extending to the eastern parts of Bay of Bengal. According to the prevailing position of the trough line, districts to the south of Patna are expected to receive comparatively more rainfall than the northern parts,” said P.N. Chaudhary, senior meteorologist, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna.

Patna received around 1mm rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Sunday. The mid-day bulletin of India Meteorological Department gave a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Bihar during the next three days.

Ganga was flowing 129cm and 44cm above the danger level at Gandhi Ghat and Digha Ghat, respectively, on Sunday morning but the water level remained almost static over the past 24 hours. “Ganga is flowing almost at static level along Patna. We are expecting the water level in the Ganga along Patna to recede from Tuesday,” said Jawahar Lal, superintending engineer, flood control planning and monitoring circle (Patna), water resources department.

Though the water level of the Ganga is not a cause for concern, the waterlogged streets in the city after the rain on Sunday gave motorists and pedestrians a tough time. Several two-wheelers skidded on the slushy Ashiana-Digha road because of the ongoing work for covering the Ashiana-Digha drain. The traffic moved at a snail’s place at some areas because of snarls.
