Bettiah: Family members of Sheikh Mustafa on Wednesday accused police of adopting double standards in his murder case and threatened to immolate themselves if the killers were not arrested immediately.

Mustafa, a gangster who was known as the Veerappan of Champaran, was gunned down on January 30 at Akwa Parsawni village in West Champaran. His family members have named 12 people as accused in the case.

His family members are angry over the police's failure to arrest a named accused in the murder.

"If our voice reaches the corridors of power, we will let Nitish ji know that we have no other option but to commit mass suicide to protest police inaction. We are making rounds of the police station for the past many days. Instead of arresting the criminals, the police is asking us to give information on their hideouts," said Naseem Alam, Mustafa's son over phone from Akwa Parsawani.

"How long do they require to initiate action like property attachment? Fifteen days have passed. The police is trying to hush up the case. We want justice for our father," the son said.

The murderers are roaming free, he alleged.

The police said they were on the case.

"We suspect that the criminals have escaped to Nepal. If they don't surrender, we will attach their properties," said Krishna Murari Gupta, officer-in-charge of Sahodra police station.
