Patna, Feb. 13: The wife of a police officer was allegedly set on fire after she resisted an attempt by anti-socials to commit dacoity in her house at Babupur village under Ishipur Barahaat police station in Bhagalpur district late on Saturday night.
The victim, Krishna Mishra, 33, has been admitted to Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH) for treatment. She has sustained 50 per cent burn injuries in the incident.
The shocking incident took place at around 10.30pm when the victim, wife of an assistant sub-inspector of police, Siyaram Mishra, was alone in the house. She told the police that about half-a-dozen criminals barged into her house and started looking for her husband’s licensed weapon. The criminals ransacked the house after holding her captive at gunpoint. When she tried to resist their loot attempt, they thrashed her and set the house on fire. She was allegedly thrown into the fire by the criminals, who left the spot only after threatening her of dire consequences.
She told the police she raised an alarm but nobody came for her rescue. “A wedding was being solemnised in the neighbourhood. So the neighbours could not listen to the alarm raised by her,” she told the police.
She somehow alerted the villagers, who admitted her to the hospital. The victim claimed that the documents of her property and other articles were gutted in the fire. Her husband is posted at Pakur in Jharkhand.
When contacted, Bhagalpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sanjay Singh said the statement of the woman was being verified. “The victim lives with her husband in Jharkhand. On the fateful night, she had come to her in-law’s house for some work,” he said.
The SSP said the motive of the anti-socials, who barged into the police official’s house, was being ascertained. “Raids are on to apprehend the persons involved in the crime,” he told The Telegraph over the phone.
