Patna, Jan. 12: Think twice before throwing away crushed plastic bottles or broken bangles as such products can deck up your homes in a fairly artistic way.

A group of 42 students pursuing fashion designing at Ignou not only showed people how to use such waste products in an aesthetic way, but they also proved the creative edge of their faculty.

The students had gathered at Udyog Bhavan in the state capital to take part in an art competition, Creation 2012, and were given a week’s time to prepare decorative items by using five waste materials.

They picked up items such as matchsticks, plastic bottles, bangles and wool to make beautiful showpieces, jewellery, posters and flower vases.

The items were judged by Asha Singh and Shifali Singh, teachers of Arvind Mahila College and JD Women’s College respectively, Pradeep Tekriwal, owner of a popular garments shop, and Sudhir Kumar, a fashion designer.

Pooja Kumari, a third semester student, said: “I have made a doll by using spices such as red chilli, mustard seeds and bay leaf.”

Soni Singh, a second semester student, was adjudged winner for her showpiece made of peacock feathers.

The second prize went to Rukhsar Raza for a scenery that she made with grass and sand, while Ruchi finished third for her Ganesha idol made of stones. The winners got mementos and certificates.

Asha Singh, one of the judges, said: “It was amazing to see the students coming out with such great ideas.”
