Patna: Three FIRs have been lodged over Friday's firing, arson and road blockade in Samastipur district's Tajpur that left one person dead and several persons injured.

The first of the three FIRs is for the mob attack on the Tajpur police station following the murder of medicine dealer Janardan Thakur late on Wednesday night. The complaint has been registered on the statement of a magistrate who was deployed at the police station to deal with the law and order situation.

The second FIR is for the road blockade and arson on National Highway 28 near Bharokhra village. While eight persons have been named accused, over 500 others are still unidentified. They had put up a road blockade and disrupted traffic on the busy road. Several vehicles were also damaged.

The final FIR has been lodged on Dharmendra Kumar's statement. A resident of Bharokhra village, Dharmendra is the brother of Jitendra Kumar who was killed on Friday when local residents in Tajpur allegedly exchanged fire with the police in protest against the murder of Janardan Thakur.

Dharmendra has alleged that Jitendra died in police firing and has demanded action against the erring police personnel.

Samastipur superintendent of police (SP) Deepak Ranjan said over a dozen persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on the police station and road blockade on NH 28. "The identity of the attackers is being ascertained with the help of video clips of the incident," he told The Telegraph.

Trouble had begun on Friday when a group of residents forced shopkeepers near Tajpur railway station to down shutters in protest against the medicine dealer's murder two nights ago. Another group blocked NH 28, leading to heavy traffic jam, and when the police used force to lift the blockade, the protesters roughed them up. The cops lathicharged the mob following which the mob laid siege to the Tajpur police station, pelting it with stones.

SP Ranjan said normalcy had returned to the block headquarters town but armed police force would remain stationed in sensitive localities as a precaution. Personnel of the Bihar Military Police and the Sashastra Seema Bal have also been deployed, he added.

Ranjan admitted that Jitendra's relatives had met him and other senior officers on Friday. A delegation of the RJD leaders also called on district magistrate Pranav Kumar and SP Ranjan to demand the immediate arrest of the erring cops. "The allegation levelled by the deceased's kin is being verified," Ranjan said.

The officials also assured every assistance to the town's businessmen as most shops and establishments remained closed on Saturday.
