Patna, July 24: Tension is brewing at Karakat in Rohtas between the residents of the area and police. An FIR was lodged against 36 persons in connection with an attack on the police at Gorai village on Saturday.
Around six policemen, including sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bikramganj Pramod Kumar, were injured in stone pelting.
Rohtas superintendent of police (SP) Manu Maharaj said while 36 persons had been made named accused in the FIR lodged by Karakat police, about 100 others were yet to be identified. “I am personally looking into the case and the guilty will not be spared,” he said.
The SP said the official vehicles of the SDPO and the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) were damaged by the mob when they reached the spot to remove the road blockade and restore traffic on Bikramganj-Karakat road on Saturday. The SP, however, denied report of police firing.
Sources said one person identified as Pramod Rajak had received bullet injuries in the firing.
The trouble erupted after a group of residents, including businessmen, blocked the road and disrupted traffic in protest against unprecedented rise in incidents of theft in the past few weeks. They also laid a siege to Karakat police station. The mob turned violent when the police tried to use force to remove the blockade.
Taking a serious note of the incident, the state police headquarters has ordered an inquiry. “The deputy inspector-general of Shahabad range has been asked to inquire into the matter and submit a report to the police headquarters,” DGP Neel Mani said.
