Food zones within a brightly lit Gandhi Maidan where vendors sell eatables only at an earmarked place. Designated parking lots at the outer perimeter of the Maidan. Dustbins everywhere, and fines for litterbugs.
It may sound like a wish list, but these are plans drawn up at a meeting Patna development commissioner Anand Kishor held last week with senior officials including Patna district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agrawal to discuss measures to improve residents' lives in the state capital.
The iconic Sri Krishna Memorial Hall at the northern end of Gandhi Maidan will also get a facelift. The district administration has decided to engage architect Kapoor and Associates to figure out how.
"To make the Gandhi Maidan beautiful, we have also decided to ditch the usual bamboo structures for seating during Republic Day and Independence Day and instead build a prefabricated aluminum stair-like structure for visitors to enjoy the events," Kishor said.
The urban development department has been asked to invite tenders for installing the new structure,
Kishor directed officials to identify places where dustbins will be kept.
"The meeting also decided to install three more high mast lights at Gandhi Maidan. At present, there are seven such lights," he said.
Gandhi Maidan was last renovated in 2015, with four new gates added to the four that existed. The old gates were also renovated and widened up to 25 feet. Further back, in 2007, the Maidan was also spruced up with repair works of boundary walls and grills, construction of new benches and repairing of old ones, planting of trees, construction of pathways carried out by different agencies including National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and State Bank of India (SBI).
The SK Memorial Hall, probably the only place in the capital where 2,000 people can sit in an air-conditioned auditorium and watch cultural, political and other events, was last renovated in 2012.
"Among the measures decided to renovate the S K Memorial Hall is opening a cafeteria within the premises along with two high mast lights to be installed at both gates of the hall to provide better lights to the visitors," Kishor said. "Again, we have decided to construct an additional exit door which could be used during emergency needs. More rest rooms would be built inside the hall while the entire public area, both inside and outside, would be monitored by CCTV cameras."
For installation of the cameras, directives have been issued to Bihar State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Beltron), Patna, a state government undertaking.
Buses will not be allowed to park in front of the SK Memorial hall, Kishor said, and violators will find their vehicles seized.
