
Central University of South Bihar discussed gender equality on Thursday, International Women's Day, besides organising events like poster-making and rangoli-making competitions.
Anil Kumar Singh Jha, associate professor of sociology, said the programme aimed at remembering and realising the financial, political and social achievements of women, and discuss and brainstorm about future prospects for women.
Samapika Mohapatra, head of development studies, focused on gender equality and advocated providing equality to women in society. Sanat Kumar Sharma, dean students' welfare, also addressed the event.
Anjali, one of the college students, said: "The session was enriching as we heard about various rights and provisions given to women in the Constitution."
Rights talk
St Xavier's College of Education held a seminar on "Empowering women by sensitising them against sexual domestic harassment and Pocso" on Thursday, in collaboration with All India Women's Conference, Bihar. BEd and MEd students attended the talk.
All India Women's Conference Bihar president Manorama Singh said there was a need to seriously discuss women's rights as violence against them was rapidly rising. Patna High Court lawyer Ashok Priyadashi also threw light on legal aspects of women rights.
In his keynote address, college principal Father Thomas Perumalil, S.J. thanked the women's conference for organising the seminar.
"There has been a lot of improvement but each one of us should do what we can to truly make a positive change for women," he said.
The education department students also took an oath of empowerment at the programme anchored by first-year BEd students Varun Kumar and Nidhi Mishra. The students also expressed their talent and views on the issue through a painting competition.
Later four different groups of the college presented skits on women issues. The Gandhi House presented "Betiya Nahi Abhishap", Tagore House "Tu Chal", Zakir House "Komal Hai Kamjhor Nahi", and Aurobindo House "The Divine Switch".
Safety at work
Retired and current teachers of Patna University and working professionals addressed a seminar on women empowerment organised by Magadh Mahila College's commerce department on International Women's Day.
College principal Shashi Sharma chaired the function and welcomed the guests, including Patna University retired professor Bharti S. Kumar, Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship Corporate Society president Kalpana Kumari, wing commander Narendra Kumar and Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship Development director Manoj Kumar Sinha.
Surbhi, a student present at the programme, said: "The students also raised issues like proper security to women working in different sectors, implementation of prevention of sexual harassment act in the workplace."
