Underprivileged children would soon be able to receive education thanks to an initiative by Loyola Alumni Association.

The association would help underprivileged kids get education. The panel has decided to explain to them the importance of education.

The president of the association, Amarendra Prasad, said many children sell vegetables or work at tea shops. Prasad said: “These kids do not know that they are spoiling such an important phase of their lives. The time to be utilised in studies is spent on the streets. Earning a bit of money makes them feel they are using their time for a good purpose. Some children also sell vegetables with their mothers, who believe the kids are assisting them but the reality is something else.”

Prasad said it was important to explain to them the value of education. He said: “The alumni members would visit slums where they stay and convince them and their parents. Whichever school is nearby would be approached to provide these kids education. For example, Loyola High School is near Kurji Mor and it runs an institute for underprivileged children.”

The children would be convinced to go to some government school or institute, which conducts classes for underprivileged children. The schools would be asked to give concession.

The association also plans to honour retired teachers on Teachers’ Day. Later, the association members would try to solve their problems.

The association would organise a pre-Rakhi event to enlighten kids on importance of the festival. Rakhis would be tied to trees to develop a sense of care for the environment.
