Patna, Oct. 13: District magistrate (DM) Sanjay Kumar Singh today admitted that the Ganga ghats in the state capital were not ready for Chhath. He was also quick to add that a remedy would be found soon.

“We will soon prepare a list of ghats that are not safe. Measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the devotees visiting the ghats during Chhath,” he said.

The DM’s office may take a few days to accomplish this task but The Telegraph spotted the unsafe ghats (see graphics) today itself.

The DM today visited Collectorate Ghat, Anta Ghat and a few others. He said: “The condition of the ghats is pathetic. They are not ready for Chhath. But I assure the residents of the city of clean ghats for the festival.”

Singh called up PMC commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pal after inspecting the ghats. “He told me tenders have been invited for cleaning the ghats. The work will start soon,” said the DM.

Chhath begins this year on October 30. On the first day — Nahay Khay — devotees make a beeline to the ghats to take a ritual bath before their meals. Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) usually starts preparations for cleaning up the ghats soon after Durga Puja.
