Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation deputy mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain was sent to Samastipur jail in judicial custody for 14 days on Saturday evening in car theft and arms act cases.
Hussain had been evading arrest since November 2, 2007 in the case lodged with Muffasil police station of Samastipur in 1998. He had moved court for bail on Friday.
Samastipur superintendent of police (SP) Varun Kumar Sinha on Sunday confirmed that Hussain had been sent to Samastipur jail. Samastipur police had filed a chargesheet against him in court and issued an arrest warrant.
Hussain, who won the municipal election and was elected deputy mayor in June this year, had allegedly suppressed the fact about the pending arrest warrant in the affidavit furnished to the district election office in Muzaffarpur. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar has taken a note of Hussain’s alleged attempt to hide the truth and has ordered a probe. The SSP said he has requested the Samastipur SP to expedite speedy trial of cases pending against the deputy mayor following directives of the state election commission.
Rajesh said he has requested the district court to expedite speedy trials of cases pending against 13 newly elected members of the civic body, including Hussain. Samastipur police officers also visited Muzaffarpur on Sunday and collected details of criminal antecedents of Hussain.
Mohammad Shahab Alam, who unsuccessfully contested the election against Hussain from ward number 43, has submitted a petition to district magistrate Santosh Kumar Mall seeking his intervention to cancel his election and remove Hussain from the post of deputy mayor.
