A flood-like situation in the district has adversely hit the functioning of 250 government schools in rural areas.

Around 3,000 students are enrolled in these schools. Nathnagar, Ishmailpur, Narayanpur, Kahalgaon and Sabour are the worst-hit areas. Sources in the district administration said no alternate arrangements could be made for the affected students, as the block education officers of the affected areas have not yet sent any report.

Mithun Kumar, a student of a government middle school in Narayanpur block, said: "Not only is my school inundated but even our fields are submerged. We face the same situation every year." Tarun Kiran, headmaster of a government middle school in Narayanpur, said the school was closed since August 17 after the approach road to the school got submerged in water. "Student do not turn up mainly because of the water and hence, we had to declare holidays unofficially," he said.

Floodwater has entered the school premises at Srirampur, Bairiya and Dogacchi under Nathnagar block, which has resulted in the disruption of academic activities in these schools as well.

The district education officer, Phool Babu Choudhary said: "We would compensate the classes by conducting special classes during holidays so that the syllabus can be completed."
