At least seven police personnel suffered injuries when a mob attacked Dhanarua police station in Patna rural on Wednesday to force the cops to release two persons detained for violating liquor prohibition.

A group led by RJD leader Rekha Devi put up a road blockade near Dhanarua and disrupted traffic on the Patna-Gaya road to protest the detention of Rajesh Bind, the husband of a former mukhiya and his associate, allegedly for consuming alcohol.

The police were greeted with stones when they tried to remove the blockade. Enraged over the action, the protesters assaulted policemen with bamboo sticks, causing severe injuries to seven of them.

Three persons, including Rekha, were taken into custody for "inciting the mob".

Another group later attacked the police station and pelted stones. The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the mob.

Masaurhi sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Surendra Kumar said the police had picked up Rajesh Bind and his associate when they were creating a scene under the influence of alcohol on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, RJD supporters led by Rekha, paralysed traffic on the Patna-Gaya road. They attacked the police when they tried to restore traffic movement by removing the blockade. "The police have registered an FIR against the protesters and detained three of them," he told The Telegraph over phone.

Masaurhi sub-divisional officer Anand Sharma said the local police have been asked to book the MLA for provoking the mob to attack the security forces and for ransacking the police station. "Nobody can be allowed to take law into one's hand," he added.

The situation was brought under control after the intervention of senior police official. The SDPO said one of the injured policemen had been sent to the local government hospital after his condition worsened.

On the other hand residents alleged that two of the seriously injured in the police lathicharge have been admitted to a private hospital. The police didn't spare innocent passers-by who fell victim to police brutality.
